Vivre l’instant presént.. ?
“What is the one thing you’re most excited about right now ? “ was the question that popped into my feed this morning.
It was a before I brush my teeth, take a shower or walk into my studio day kind of question.
So here I lay with this thought swimming in my head.. with one clear and definitive answer… ‘Being Art’. Infact it is now that I realise, this has been with me my whole life… The outcome of my creativity (thankfully) has done its job in bringing about a shift … Enough to make people want to exchange money for it, admire it or absorb it through reading. Yes, the process of making art is fulfilling, joyful, exhilarating .. but today I realise it goes way deeper than that.. Into who we are as humans, how we live in the world, our relationships with others, our curiosity, our generosity and the ability to put it outside of ourselves.
More grateful that I chose this path less travelled than ever before, I know that this has never really been about the outcome, but who I am in it.
A long time ago, I was gifted with a book titled ‘Personhood – The art of being fully human’. It has dog-eared corners and a definitive bite mark on page 53 by my friend holding onto it with his teeth as he fell out of a hammock suspended over the pool. Tragically, is life was cut short .. but his spirit lives on in me because of his expressive, curious view and how he unnerved me enough to search deeper.
When we gather people like this around us, they serve to enrich our lives. Like my friend Nancy.. who turned a whopping 99 years yesterday. Hers is a life rich in ‘being art’ and she continues to share its fruits with us all.
Fortunately, when I was a very young girl my father introduced me to the writings of philosophers and deep thinkers. Besides his love, I don’t think I could have asked for a greater gift. In my opinion, these are the things that shape a wide view and open heart. It these writings and lessons, that help us dive down deeply or find solace floating over the surface of things.
Being Art allows us the freedom to create in any way we truly feel…It’s an authenticity of up, down or in the centre. Because of it we get to reside in places of curiosity, newness, uncertainty, inception..journey… All the while creating art that reflects a sense of that.
‘the purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.’…
Elizabeth Roosevelt
Tomorrow may bring a whole different answer.. But that will be then, or as my future French neighbour may say ‘vivre l’instant presént’.
Happy creating !
